I’m a flight attendant — this hack will tell you if your room is crawling with bedbugs
If you don’t breathe all over a hotel bed before getting under the covers, you’re buggin’!
Although huffing and puffing on a mattress might seem like an odd way to kick off a vacay, it’s how this bedbug-phobic flight attendant is able to breathe a sigh of relief prior to hitting the sheets.
“The first thing we do in every hotel room that we come to is check for bedbugs,” Hannah, a cabin crew guru, based in Chicago, explained in a trending TikTok how-to.
“Bedbugs are attracted to your carbon dioxide that you breathe out,” said the brunette, a registered nurse and flight attendant newbie. She and her uncle, who’s been in the airplane biz for more than 13 years, shared their best tips for baiting the bitty bloodsuckers to her over 50,000 virtual viewers.
“So,” continued Hannah, “I flip up the corners [of the mattress] and start breathing on the bed.”
Experts claim that the carbon dioxide humans emit from our breath, combined with our body warmth, attracts bedbugs.
It’s also been determined that “CO2 is an effective alternative to conventional fumigants for eliminating bedbugs hiding in infested household items such as clothing, shoes, books, electronics, sofas, and so forth,” per Rutgers University entomologists.
And most folks would do just about anything to eliminate the vile vermin from their everyday lives — especially in major cities like Paris and the Big Apple, where the nasty nuisances are known to run rampant.
An American Airlines passenger’s first-class cloud cruise from NYC to Detroit was recently ruined after they spotted a bloodthirsty bedbug crawling up their leg while at 30,000 feet.
“I put it on the cocktail napkin to show the [flight attendant] who promptly informed the Captain using the phone/intercom,” the grossed-out flire ranted on Reddit, adding a pic of the pest as proof. “Hoping no stragglers got on my backpack or checked bag.”
But Hannah’s hacks take things far beyond hope.
To ensure that neither she nor her online audience beds down with the little devils while on the go, the travel pro says, “you need to pull up all the sheets and check the corners to see if there’s any bugs.”
“The other thing that you can also do is put a bar of soap at the end of your bed,” she continued. “The bar of soap draws out the bedbugs.”
And while it may seem funny, Hannah insists that a nip from the icky insects is no laughing matter.
“Bedbugs are no joke,” she warned. “Whenever they bite you, they are painful, they are red, they are big, they will cause swelling.”
MSNBC and CNN anchors held back tears and questioned the state of America as they reckoned with a stunning win by former President Donald Trump during the early hours of Wednesday.
CNN political commentator Van Jones appeared to be on the verge of weeping as it became increasingly apparent that Trump would handily defeat Vice President Kamala Harris in Tuesday’s election.
Jones, the former Obama administration official and Democratic Party activist, gave a somber assessment of the election late Tuesday, saying he “woke up this morning with a dream” only to be “going to bed with a nightmare.”
“I’m thinking about the people who are not a part of anybody’s elite, who are hurting tonight,” Jones told CNN co-panelists on Tuesday as the vote count in the key battleground states showed Trump well positioned to capture a second term in the White House.
Meanwhile, MSNBC anchor Jen Psaki, who served as White House press secretary during the Biden administration until 2022, predicted the Democratic Party would begin questioning its decision to oust President Biden from the race.
“It will begin,” Psaki said on NBC News late Tuesday, before the network had projected a winner. “She’s run a campaign over the course of 107 days. That is not something we’ve seen in history. And there’ll be lots of questions about exactly that, the timing and the impact of that.”
MSNBC panelists reflected on Trump’s overwhelming dominance among swing states, as well as an outpouring of Republican votes that gave the GOP control of the Senate.
“We had talked about a red wave two years ago that never materialized,” “Morning Joe” anchor Joe Scarborough said Wednesday. “I’ve got to say, this is the biggest red wave I’ve seen since Ronald Reagan’s 49-state victory in 1984. It seems every Republican across the country improved.”
“Morning Joe” panelist Claire McCaskill, the former United States senator from Missouri, acknowledged the “red wave” and placed into question the Democratic Party’s understanding of the country.
“I think we have to acknowledge that Donald Trump knows our country better than we do,” she said. “I think he figured out that anger and, frankly, fear were way more powerful than appealing to people’s better angels. That anger and fear were going to work in this election.”
As of around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Associated Press reported Trump had won key battleground states and clinched victory with 277 electoral votes.
CNN’s Jones said black women in particular, “who know a little bit about being talked down to” and “having their economic dreams crushed,” are “trading in a lot of hope for a lot of hurt” because “they were hoping that … one of their own could be seen as worthy.”
Trump has vowed to crack down on illegal immigration during his term in office. Jones said that those who “don’t have papers” have reason to be “terrified tonight.”
MSNBC panelists reacted to an increasingly conservative country.
“America, first of all, is far more to the right than anytime in our lifetimes, even going back to the Reagan years,” Scarborough said.
The “Morning Joe” host said Republicans will likely dominate all branches of government for the next several years.
“The scope and scale of this victory is sweeping,” Scarborough said Wednesday. “This is a Democratic Party that has been just wiped out this morning.”
McCaskill claimed Trump had won the presidency by playing on voters’ fears.
“Whether you’re afraid of immigrants or afraid of people who are trans, he figured that out. And I think we all thought everyone’s better angels would prevail,” she said. “Turns out, the better angels went on vacation when Donald Trump came down the escalator. And they haven’t returned.”
A small jet crashed through an airport wall and into a car during an aborted takeoff at an Arizona airport, killing all five people on board and snarling traffic for hours, according to reports.
Smoke rose from the smashed auto and the plane’s broken fuselage, as they burned on a roadway outside Mesa’s Falcon Field Airport after the 4:40 pm, CNN reported.
“He went through that dip, he went past the road through the metal gated fence that they have, through, I believe, a few concrete walls,” eyewitness Joshua Golabi, a pilot, told the outlet.
“We were just about to get into our aircraft and go when we heard a pop and saw a plume of smoke,” he said. “It’s just jarring and it’s a reminder to all pilots to always fly and maneuver as safe as you can.”
Authorities have not identified the five victims inside the Honda HA-420 business jet.
It wasn’t clear if anyone was injured in the car.
“We had a plane that took off from Falcon Field Airport in Mesa and upon take off, it crashed into a single vehicle on Greenfield Road,” Ramirez-Ramos told Fox affiliate KSAZ-TV on Wednesday.
Mesa police said Greenfield Road, which runs next to the airport, remained closed Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration and Mesa police and fire officials are investigating the cause of the fatal crash.
“Big congratulations to our 45th and now 47th President on an extraordinary political comeback and decisive victory,” Bezos, the billionaire who bought the Post more than a decade ago, wrote on his X social media account on Wednesday.
“No nation has bigger opportunities. Wishing @realDonaldTrump all success in leading and uniting the America we all love.”
Another tech titan, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, also praised Trump for his “decisive victory.”
“We have great opportunities ahead of us as a country. Looking forward to working with you and your administration,” Zuckerberg wrote on his Threads account on Wednesday.
Apple CEO Tim Cook also chimed in, writing on X: “Congratulations President Trump on your victory!”
“We look forward to engaging with you and your administration to help make sure the United States continues to lead with and be fueled by ingenuity, innovation, and creativity,” Cook wrote on X.
Trump recently praised Cook as a “great executive” because the Apple boss reached out to him directly during his first term in office.
Then-President Trump granted Cook a request to exempt Apple from tariffs that were imposed on Chinese parts that the iPhone maker needed to make its products.
Another leader of a tech giant, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, credited Trump for his “decisive victory.”
“We are in a golden age of American innovation and are committed to working with his administration to help bring the benefits to everyone,” the Google boss wrote on his X account.
Contrary to polls which predicted a photo finish, Trump soundly defeated Harris in Tuesday’s election, according to media projections.
The projections are based on updated vote counts from the seven key battleground states — all of which will likely be captured by the Republican former president once the final votes are officially tallied.
Harris supporters on Wednesday responded to Bezos’ tweet by venting their frustration over his newspaper’s abandonment of its decades-long policy of endorsing a presidential candidate.
“Thank you for this reminder to cancel my Amazon Prime membership,” another X user commented.
Trump supporters praised Bezos for the non-endorsement.
Valentina Gomez, a former Republican candidate for Missouri secretary of state, wrote: “Jeff, you went against the status quo of not making an endorsement towards the democrats. You’re a businessman and a leader not a loser and a follower.”
“You got balls,” Gomez wrote.
Other Trump backers urged Bezos to use the opportunity to reverse the Washington Post’s leftist tilt.
“Well said Jeff. Now put some of your vast amounts of money where your mouth is and go gut the Washington Post and turn that socialist rag into a respectful media outlet once and for all,” one X user wrote.
The Washington Post reportedly lost 250,000 subscribers — or 10% of its regular readership — after Bezos made the decision to block the newspaper’s editorial board from publishing its prepared endorsement of Harris.
The Amazon founder also denied that the decision was part of a strategy to curry favor with Trump given the fact that his administration will have regulatory oversight of industries where Bezos has significant financial interests.
Bezos, who is no longer CEO of Amazon but remains its largest shareholder, is also the owner of Blue Origin, a space exploration company that is seeking to win federal contracts to transport American astronauts to and from the moon.
The newspaper’s decision not to endorse prompted the resignations of two of its columnists as well as three of the nine members of the editorial board.
Bezos has reportedly given Washington Post CEO Will Lewis a mandate to broaden the newspaper’s readership by including more conservative voices on its op-ed page.
A woman who was denied entry to a Fitness First pilates class after arriving late has lost her bid to sue the gym chain for $16,000.
Sydney woman Sophia McGinn was headed to the pilates class on July 17, 2023, when she was asked to leave, court documents reveal.
Ms McGinn’s gym contract specified that “entry after the class has started may be refused by the instructor”, which is a rule to prevent people from attending without being present for the warm-up at the start of a class.
She had only been a member of the well-known fitness franchise for under a month, but the relationship took a downward turn following the pilates incident.
After discussions between the parties and Fitness First providing her with free classes, the gym put Ms McGinn’s membership on freeze as she was not actively using the services.
On 17 March this year, Ms McGinn terminated her contract and filed a complaint with the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal the following day.
She claimed that Fitness First had breached the contract and failed to comply with its consumer guarantee obligations under the Australian Consumer Law.
The disgruntled gym-goer sought damages of $16,600 which she calculated would have been the difference between the cost of her Fitness First membership and a comparable Virgin Active Membership over a 20-year time period.
“Ms McGinn had not entered into a new gym membership at a higher price nor provided a quote from another gym as to the higher membership prices she would have to pay,” the Tribunal found.
Both her claims were unsuccessful as Ms McGinn failed to demonstrate that Fitness First had breached the contract, and had argued instead that she was unaware of its terms.
Even if a breach had been established, it is not clear that she would have been able to recover compensation anyway, as she “has not incurred any loss or damage”, the Tribunal found.
Rather, she had “speculated about a future potential loss or damage.”
The case was dismissed on June 28, 2024, however, Ms McGinn launched an appeal before it was dismissed again on October 21.
Fitness First operates over 50 branches throughout Australia, with the lowest membership fee starting at $21.99 per week.
Reformer pilates is exclusively available to Platinum Plus members, who pay $36.99 per week for access to all Passport and Platinum clubs.

San Jose State teammates ‘don’t feel safe anymore’ in transgender controversy after coach suspended: captain
San Jose State women’s volleyball players are angry and concerned for their safety after the Spartans’ assistant coach, Melissa Batie-Smoose, was suspended by the university amid the controversy over reports that redshirt senior Blaire Fleming is transgender, team co-captain Brooke Slusser said in an interview with OutKick.
Batie-Smoose was suspended Saturday, less than two hours before the team’s match against New Mexico, after she filed a Title IX complaint earlier that week, claiming SJSU’s transgender-inclusion policy created a toxic environment for female athletes and accused the university of overtly showing favoritism for Fleming, according to a complaint obtained by Quillette.
Slusser — a junior starting setter, who was formerly roommates with Fleming — said she and her team are worried about who will protect their voice after Batie-Smoose’s suspension.
“We aren’t happy and we don’t feel safe anymore,” Slusser said. “Melissa was that person that we felt like as long as she was there, we had someone that would stand up for us. And now there’s no one there that will.”
Todd Kress is the team’s head coach.
Slusser, who previously spoke out about against Fleming after teams began forfeiting matches against SJSU, explained tensions are high within the team.
“I don’t think the school sees how much they just basically ruined this program by taking Melissa away from us,” Slusser said. “So, who knows what’s to come in the future [with regard] to what our team will do or how we will react from this.”
Slusser recalled players getting a text to meet before Saturday’s match.
“None of the coaching staff was at the meeting, it was just the players,” she said. “Some man from the university … sat our team down and said that [Coach Batie-Smoose] has been put on leave, will not be back and players were not supposed to reach out to her or speak to her at all.
“As of right now, tensions are very high for my team with how angry we are now that Melissa’s gone. Emotions are through the roof right now.
“A few girls broke down into tears when we found out and everyone was in shock. Melissa was such a backbone for a lot of us and was that support system a lot of us went to for everything.”
San Jose State defeated New Mexico in four sets on Saturday.
In a statement to OutKick, the university confirmed Batie-Smoose’s suspension but did not provide a reason.
“The associate head coach of the San Jose State University women’s volleyball team is not with the team at this time, and we will not provide further information on this matter,” the university said.
Slusser took aim at the university on social media after the news of Batie-Moose’s suspension.
“My assistant coach spoke truth to protect my team. Then…they fire her,” Slusser wrote on X. “They took away the only safe space we had in the program.Because she knew that it was right to stand up for the 18 women on the team. Not one man.”
Fleming, reportedly a biological male, is a 6-foot outside and right-side hitter and is considered a top player on SJSU’s women’s volleyball team.
Per Quillette, Batie-Smoose filed a 33-page Title IX complaint on Oct. 29 with officials at the California university, the Mountain West Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), to investigate (1) the overt favoritism she believes SJSU has shown to Fleming, at the expense of Fleming’s 18 female teammates; and the unsettling measures that SJSU officials have allegedly taken in order to suppress expressions of concern from these affected women.”
Batie-Smoose alleged Fleming conspired with an opponent to help San Jose State lose a match and attempt to injure Slusser.
In the complaint, Batie Smoose explained that Fleming’s physical power stood out — specifically “spiking the [ball] and blocking on the front row, due to Fleming’s leaping ability and hitting power, which far exceeded that of any player in the [Mountain West] Conference.”
Batie-Smoose’s complaint came after Slusser joined several other female athletes in a lawsuit suing the NCAA for violations of its Title IX inclusion of trans athletes in college sports.
The class-action lawsuit was filed in March and funded by the Independent Council on Women’s Sports (ICONS).
Slusser said in the complaint that she lived with Fleming and three other teammates — and that she did not know at first that Fleming is transgender.
Slusser also alleged the SJSU athletic department would assign her to room with Fleming on road trips, and then she later learned that Fleming specifically requested her as a roommate.
OutKick previously reported that San Jose State University hid Fleming’s birth gender for two years.
The situation made headlines when Southern Utah forfeited its match against San Jose State in the Santa Clara Tournament in September.
That sparked a series of forfeits from four other schools — Boise State, Wyoming, Utah State and Nevada — in the weeks that followed.
Fleming played the previous two seasons at San Jose State — after one year with Coastal Carolina in 2020. Fleming also played on the girls’ varsity volleyball team at John Champe High School in Virginia.
In April, Reduxx, a website described as “feminist news and opinion,” published a story claiming Fleming was a biological male with the assigned birth name, Brayden.
