A sequel to Dogma has been officially announced more than 25 years after the first film.
As per Deadline, Kevin Smith has confirmed that he’ll be directing a sequel to his 1999 classic Dogma, with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon returning as fallen angels Bartleby and Loki.
The director made the announcement at Vulture Festival, sharing his excitement about diving back into the Dogma universe.
Smith said at the event, “Some people will be like, ‘Don’t f—ing touch it. You’ll ruin it’.”
“And I’m here to tell you: I will. I’m f—ing tickled. I found a way in.”
“I have been able to hold that over both their heads for 25 f—ing years, which is why they keep showing up in all the movies.”
He further mentioned that Affleck and Damon will have major roles in the sequel, not just quick cameos.
He further added, “Expect a cameo from them — more than a f—ing cameo.”
“The only way we get a Dogma sequel made is if they’re there.”
“So count on those guys being there.”
The original Dogma movie tells the story of Bartleby and Loki, two fallen angels who try to use a loophole in Catholic doctrine to get back into Heaven.
Their plan, however, risks unravelling existence itself.
The movie, starring Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, and Alanis Morissette as God, stirred up quite a bit of controversy when it came out but has become a cult favourite over the years.
Dogma was the fourth film in Smith’s View Askewniverse, which also includes Clerks (1994), Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Clerks II (2006), Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019), and Clerks III (2022).
Smith’s decision to make a sequel comes after he regained the rights to Dogma from the Weinsteins, who had kept it tied up in legal complications.
Details about “Dogma 2″‘s plot are still under wraps, but Smith has hinted that it will be more of a companion piece rather than a straightforward sequel.
Dogma will also be re-released in 2025, featuring a SteelBook edition and streaming availability.
Smith plans to tour alongside the release, hosting screenings and talking with audiences about the film’s lasting impact.
