In the heart of the Czech Republic, a small village has become a canvas of creativity thanks to the remarkable efforts of 94-year-old Agnes Kasparkova, affectionately known as Anežka. Her enchanting artwork has turned the village of Louka into one of the country’s most visually stunning locales.
A Lifelong Passion for Art
Anežka Kasparkova, a retired agriculture worker, has dedicated her post-retirement years to beautifying her community. Since she retired about 30 years ago, she has passionately applied her creativity to her surroundings, transforming her small village into an outdoor art gallery.
Vibrant Floral Motifs
Every spring and summer, Anežka spends her time hand-painting intricate floral patterns on the windows and doorframes of village homes.
Her art is characterized by bold ultramarine blue paint, which vividly contrasts with the whitewashed walls of the houses. These vibrant blue motifs are inspired by the traditional floral designs from southern Moravia, her home region.
Her style, though simpler, evokes the charm of the elaborate flower garlands found in Poland’s Zalipie.
A Tradition of Beauty
The tradition of painting these floral motifs was passed down to Anežka from other village women.
Known affectionately as babička, or grandmother, Anežka has embraced this role with joy and dedication. “I’m just doing what I like,” she says of her work. “I try to help decorate the world a bit.”
Persistence and Quality
Despite the challenges posed by aging hands and the outdoor environment, Anežka meticulously works on her artwork using a small brush.
She invests in high-quality paint to ensure that her creations endure for at least two years. One of her annual highlights is refreshing the village chapel with her artistic touch, often climbing scaffolding or ladders to reach every nook and cranny.
